Harper's Justice Series

Ashes and Oaths

A very unique story written from Shane Harper’s view. At thirteen, Shane realized he was responsible for keeping his five siblings alive. Mom died. Dad was a no-good-for-nothing criminal who brought his gang home. Bad men. Shane had three sisters whom he had to protect from those men. Shane also had to keep them all fed; his three sisters and two brothers, the youngest only two years old.

Shane is telling this story to his grandchildren. Letting them know where they came from. Their grandpa and three of his siblings were protectors: a ranger, a marshal, a Pinkerton agent, and a lawyer, because they wanted to be the opposite of Galen. Protectors and justice seekers.

I’m enjoying the series, and this background story filled in some of the details of their past that made them who they were in the books.

Prequel: Blood Justice

Grady Thatcher was fifteen when four cold-blooded killers rode up to their home and murdered his parents. For six years, he’s been waiting for vengeance. Now, as a Livestock Investigator, he has the badge to pursue that vengeance. To find the outlaws who murder and steal from the innocent. His best friend, Deacon, whose family took Grady in, does all he can to try to get Grady to see that’s not the answer. It has to be justice that guides him.

Deacon Colter thinks things through before jumping into them. Maybe that’s what makes him and Grady get along so well. They are opposites that balance each other. He fears what’ll happen if Grady finds the men and uses his own justice on them rather than trusting the law…and God…to see it through.

Meanwhile, they meet two girls in Prescott who definitely add a new perspective to life. The problem…the guys find out that Lilian and Justine are the daughters of the very man they now know they are after for the murders and rustling ring. Can love win out?

Loving this series. The books can be read alone, but if you’re like me and like the whole story, I suggest reading Ashes and Oaths, then Blood Justice, and finally book one in the series, The Rustler Hunter.

Book 1: The Rustler Hunter

Rustler Hunter J.J. Westin, or Jay Wagner when he’s undercover, has been hired and sent to the Diablo Bunkhouse to find out about the rustling ring that’s been harassing the ranchers by stealing the cattle and murdering to get them. Being undercover, J.J. may have to go against all he believes to fit in and close down this gang, not to mention the beautiful cook at the camp who seems to be more than what she appears to be.

Pinkerton Agent Hayley Harper has been undercover for two weeks now. Her younger brother, Flynn, a US Marshal, is also there. She’s suspicious of the new guy and yet drawn to him. She had to stay on top of her game, though, and figure out who was good and who was the leader of the rustlers.

This story kept me engaged from beginning to end. I liked the characters and look forward to reading the stories of Haley’s brothers: Shane, Flynn, and Ike.

Book 2: The Maverick Marshal
Deputy US Marshal Flynn Harper has been chasing criminals across the Arizona Territory to deliver justice and prove he was not Galen Harper, his no-good father, who even now sat in the Yuma prison. When he headed to Holbrook to serve a warrant and arrest a man whose name was on fraudulent land and railroad documents, the protective daughter stopped him in his tracks. Made him really look at the case and find true justice.

Lavinia Beaumont had been scared for over six years. They’d moved from Georgia to Arizona to start over. And now…after seeing a wanted poster in the post office, her whole life felt like it was falling apart. And then Marshal Harper came into their mercantile with all his questions, looking for her dad. All the family she had was her father and her son. No one was going to split them up.

What a story! I was on pins and needles to see what happened next. Loved the characters and the storyline. Great series!

Book 3: The Traitor's Badge
