Interview with Marguerite Kaye
When not writing, what hobbies do you enjoy?
I grow lots of vegetables, which in the west coast of Scotland where it rains most of the time, is a real challenge – though it’s slug and midgie heaven. I love to cook, especially if I can include things I’ve grown in the garden. All the rain here helps give us lots of beautiful scenery, and I really enjoy hill walking, especially if there’s a picnic and a bottle of wine to go with it, and ditto for cycling. And it goes without saying that I read, and read, and read.

What is the strangest real life situation that is in one of your stories?
Not an actual situation, but I do like to give my secondary characters names that mean something to me. The ‘baddie’ in the Castonbury Park series was a boy who once hit me over the head with the lid of a desk in school (yes, I can bear a very long grudge), and another baddie who came to a sticky end was named for a supervisor who – well, let’s say we clashed. I named a set of three lochs after my sisters in one of my books, and a midwife in another after my cousin. Perhaps most bizarre, the list of titles I gave one of my heroes includes the shopping centre where I used to buy my lunch when I worked in a nearby office.

When did you start writing?
I won a national poetry competition when I was nine, and as a teenager I wrote (and tore up) loads of poems. While working in IT, I submitted a romance to Mills&Boon and was very graciously rejected – I still have the letter. It was only about seven years ago that I started writing seriously, starting with non-fiction articles and a column in my local paper at the same time as writing my first historical romance – which I’m delighted to say that Mills&Boon accepted in July 2008.

Do you write about places you have lived?
I’ve used my native Argyll and surrounding areas lots of times in my books – not just for locations, but many of my characters’ titles are actually local place names. I worked in Edinburgh for a good few years, and it features in a few of my books (including the one I’m working on right now), and Glasgow too, where I went to university, worked and lived for a long time, has featured in a few stories. I love to try and capture the essence of Scotland when I write about it, and I find that writing about places I love makes me love them, and appreciate them, even more.

Do you read the same types of books you write?
No, I rarely read historical romances now, because I can’t switch off my inner editor, though I do still sample, just to see what else is out there. My comfort read is old-fashioned crime, but I’m a prolific reader, and I’ll inhale pretty much any sort of book. At any one time, I’ve always got at least two books on the go, usually one research or history (which I read as ‘real’ books in print) and one fiction on my e-reader.

Rake With a Frozen Heart
Rafe St Alban, Earl of Pentland had been married once and he would never marry again. He no longer cared about an heir to carry on his many titles, he didn't seem to care about much at all. His life took a sudden turn one morning when he found a woman in his ditch, on the edge of death. And later the same day he found her stowing away in the back of carriage. What could he do but help her prove she was innocent of a crime she was being accused of. He found she added a bit of liveliness to his life that had been missing a long time.

Henrietta Markham woke up in a strange room, strange bed and with an extremely handsome half dressed man looking at her. This was a first of everything for her. Good thing she was not so beautiful as her mother because she found out this half dressed man was the earl who was known as a rake. Not that she understood exactly what a rake was other than he would be rather immoral. When she remembered she was hit on the head by a housebreaker while looking for her employers dog...Rafe didn't seem to believe her. When she returned to her governess job a bit later not only was she not believed but she was also accused of theft. She leaves the house in fear of ending of in gael with no one to help her get out...she heard the stories of how awful gael was. After hiding into a carriage that looked bound to London, so she could capture the thief and clear her name, she ends up once again with Rafe St Alban.

This was one of those books that I couldn't put down. The adventure kept moving forward and there just was not a good place to stop. The heroine is quite talkative and blurts out whatever is on her mind. The hero carries a burden of guilt and chooses to punish himself for mistakes of the past. Marguerite adds the thoughts of other characters in the book as well. I enjoyed the story and characters.

Outrageous Confessions of Lady Deborah
Lady Deborah Kinsail, a young widow at the age of eight and twenty, had the most handsome man fall on her, from the side of the house. She was out for her nightly walk while staying at what use to be her home, but now belonged to her deceased husbands cousin, when she suddenly found herself underneath him. And her life was not the same after that. Deborah had her secrets, one of them was so deep that she kept a shield up from feeling any emotions. The other secret was the talk of the ton….scandalous even.

Elliot was carrying major scars from the war. He saw too many soldiers die or maimed because those in power refused to send the supplies they needed. He found a way to fight back and help those now neglected soldiers and families. Elliot Marchmont was finishing up some ‘business’ when he fell upon the woman, literally. A woman that turned hot and cold so fast it was like she was two different women.

Can these two hurt souls help each other mend? Such a tug-of-war of emotions happen in this book. It shows how past hurts can cling so strongly and how the mind believes lies so deeply that the truth is hard to accept. This story has romance, adventure, a touch of danger and lots of secrets. I enjoyed reading it.

The Rake and The Heiress & Innocent in the Sheikh's Harem
Never Forget Me
As WWI enters the lives of those in Glen Massan, The Charmichael family home, love also enters. Can it survive in such conditions? Three stories of people on different sides, different opinions, and those who are just empty and waiting for the war to take their life. The author has weaved together these romances within the walls of the war to keep them romantic and yet the reader glimpses the realities of the war. The sexual encounters are often a desperation to know they are still alive. I really enjoyed these stories. If you tear up easily then make sure and keep a box of tissues nearby.

A Kiss Goodbye 1914
Corporal Geraint Cassell had no sympathy for the rich folks whose home they were about to take over as a training station. That is until he got to know Flora Carmichael. She was nothing of the spoiled rich girl he had assumed. But they would always be on opposites from each other. Her wealth and his plain roots. Or could love even overcome those things?

Dearest Sylvie 1916
Captain Robbie Carmichael, Flora’s eldest brother, has lost himself in the war. He became numb and uncaring, an empty shell. One night when recovering in Paris after being shot, he meets Sylvie Renaud. Less than twenty-four hours later and these two empty shells of people begin to live again. Will the war keep them apart permanently or is there hope?

Forever With Me 1918
Sheila Fraser has learned much about nursing in the years she has volunteered as a VAD. Now that the war is over people once again see her as the maid she was pre-war. When her previous employers dedicate their castle to their son’s memory, she has a chance to use what she had learned. What she didn’t expect was that the new surgeon who would be running the hospital is Luc Durand. A man she never expected to see again after Armistice Day.

The Armstrong Sisters Series
Book 1: Innocent in the Sheikh's Harem
Lady Celia Cleveden thinks of herself as eminently sensible from the tips of her sturdy boots to the top of her unadorned bonnet. It seemed logical she would marry an equally practical gentleman.

Until she's rescued by wildly enigmatic desert prince Ramiz of A'Qadiz, while traveling across his unforgiving sands. He offers her a place in his harem and Lady Celia ought to be shocked …except the seductive desert and intoxicating Ramiz make it curiously tempting….

Book 2: The Governess and the Sheikh
Seduction in the sand...Dark-hearted Sheikh Prince Jamil al-Nazarri commands his kingdom effortlessly...less so his difficult little daughter Exasperated, he hires an English governess, hoping she'll instill some much-needed discipline...

Lady Cassandra Armstrong is the most unconventional governess Jamil has ever seen With her ravishing body and impulsive passion, Cassie is as innocently alluring as she is forbidden. Famous for his unshakable honor, the reticent sheikh's resolve is about to be his feelings for Cassie are anything but honorable.

Book 3: The Beauty Within
Lady Cressida Armstrong is considered the plain sister, and a bit of a bluestocking as well. At six and twenty she has refused to marry, preferring her independence. To keep her from interfering in her younger sister’s season, she is sent to the country home to play governess for her four half-brothers.

Giovanni de Matteo has made a name for himself in England as an artist. His latest commission is to paint the four spoiled Armstrong boys. Determined to be a successful artist, he paints what the people want to see, rather than from his heart. He has lost something within his art because of this, but Cressie seems to bring it back to life. Giovanni’s quest becomes to show Cressie who she really is as he paints her, yet, he keeps his own secrets hidden.

Two unlikely people coming together to bring out their inner beauty. The author brought the characters and their emotions to life. As Cressie begins to see herself through Giovanni's eyes, it was unique how she notices others differently and the way she blossoms under the artists brush.

Book two, Innocent in the Sheikhs Harem and book three, The Governess and the Sheikh are stories about Cressie’s sisters, they take place in Arabia.

Book 4: Rumors That Ruined A Lady

Book 5: Unwed and Unrepentant
Book Blurb:
Burned by love and fearful of being trapped by marriage, headstrong Lady Cordelia Armstrong is furious when her father manipulates her into a betrothal with his business partner, and her one-time lover, Iain Hunter.

Understanding Cordelia's reluctance, Iain proposes a pretend engagement. For now they will make believe, but there is no need to fake the attraction that still burns hotly between them. As they travel to magical Arabia, the lines between fantasy and reality blur. Will either of them really be able to walk away once their deal is done?

My Review
Lady Cordelia Armstrong was not going to marry someone of her father's choosing. She could make the best choices for herself, or so she thought. After ten years of separation from her family, she decided to come home to England. To face her biggest fear, her father.

Iain Hunter was a shipbuilder. He needed Lord Armstrong's connections to go and talk with Arabian prince about building ships for them. What he didn't expect was to run into the woman he had met a year ago in Glasgow. A woman he had never forgotten.

Lord Armstrong fits his name well as he likes to strong arm those around him. He was falling from his political heights and an up and coming man like Iain could help him, especially if his daughter was thrown into the match. And Cordelia will agree to most anything to see her two sisters who are in Arabia. Even pretend to give up her independence.

Book 3:The Highlander and the Wolf Princess

A Time for Scandal
Book 1: The Undoing of Daisy Edwards
London 1923, five years after the Great War and people go on trying to live in their own ways. Or for some like Dominic Harrington they go on, existing not living. They have all lost someone and have to accept they are still alive. Dominic does have his wild little sister to help out of trouble. Only this particular night, it’s not Grace at the jail.

Daisy Edwards is a stage actress. After losing her husband she continues acting. Both on and off stage. Drinks help dull things for the moment but the endless cycle returns the next day. Then she meets Dominic and for the first time in five years something sparks to life in her. Does she want to be truly alive again?

The story lets the reader get a glimpse of what people may have felt during this time. Some partied, like Grace, and others buried themselves in their work. Can love claw through the darkness of this time? Help them get over those who are gone and start moving forward again? This is a shorter novella. A second novella is called The Awakening of Poppy Edwards who is Daisy’s sister.

Book 2: The Awakening of Poppy Edwards
Los Angeles, 1924 and Poppy Edwards is a movie star in America. She missed her sister and their Edwards Sisters shows, but Daisy wasn’t the same after her husband died in the war. Her sister had died as well in a way, the war had changed many people. So Poppy made it big in the silent films. And she had decided she would never fall in love. Never.

Lewis Cartsdyke found more than expected when he came to find Poppy in California. The war had deadened him as it had done to so many others. The woman he met to sign for his studio brought him back to life. He kept reminding himself he didn’t mix business and pleasure, it wasn’t working. He wanted her.

I like the way the author has the books in this series as first person point of views for both characters. It gives you a clear insight into each of their thoughts, feelings and fears. The stories are about picking up and moving forward after the war. Living once again and moving forward. And being brave enough to give a love a chance.

  1. Have you ever considered writing a contempory romance? Of so where would you set it the uk or somewhere more exotic :) x

    1. This comment has been removed by the author.

    2. Hi Charlotte, I am thinking of trying something contemporary this year, if I can find a space. My current idea is set in Edinburgh, but I would love to write something that would justify a research trip to France.

  2. I have never read any of your books before but I will have to check them out. Scotland sounds like a very interesting place. I love listening to people talk who are from Scotland. I just love the accents. Thanks for the giveaway and enjoy your day!

    1. Hi Gail. If you do check any of my books out, I'd love to hear what you think - I'm always chatting on Facebook. What I'd love is to have one of my Scottish books out on audio read by a Scot - maybe Euan McGregor? Bet that would get a lot of readers!

  3. I have one of your books TBR right after I finish the one I have going! All of them look wonderful, I think however, I will be simply reading the blurb for the one on the Titanic. Fear of water and all...not a good combo. Scotland sounds fantastic and is on our bucket list! Thanks for stopping by to party with us!

    1. Hi there, lovely to see you here. If you could get over your fear of water, my Titanic story is actually a free on-line read over at Harlequin. The links to it are on the book page for my blog. There's also another free on-line read of mine on Harlequin, Desert Prince, Bartered Bride. If you search for the on-line reads you'll find it.

    2. Thanks for the free book information. It took me 5 days to read a 90 page book that was all on the water. Hyperventilated 3 times and had to take Xanax just to finish it. I will just read your blurb and call it good. :-) Have a great weekend!

  4. thank you so much for answering the interview questions. It's interesting to learn little things like your secondary characters names have such a meaning to you.. what better way to expel a "demon" than name a character after someone who wronged you and dispose of them in a certain way- be it losing the heroine, winding up incarcerated or **shivers** worse :) ..or that you "praised" someone by naming a beauteous location after them. I look forward to reading your stories!

    1. Hi there Sottishmistinmass (love that!). I must admit, there's a LOT of satisfaction to be gained in using a bit of someone's name. I know it's bad of me, but knowing they'll never know feels so good - and of course, I never use a whole real name. I do love paying complements with names too. I once called a witch after one of my nicest, most unwtichy aunts, and she thought it was really funny!

  5. Thanks so much to Judy for having me on her blog, and good luck everyone with the giveaway. I talk lots about books (mine and others) and all things Scottish over on my author Facebook page (margueritekayepage), it would be lovely to see you there.

    1. Thanks for joining in, Marguerite. I was just searching if you had any free books, so I'm glad you mentioned these. Going for the links now to put on the party page.
