Interview with Kathleen Y'Barbo

Have you traveled to do research for your books?
Yes! To research The Secret Lives of Will Tucker series (Flora’s Wish, Millie’s Treasure, and Sadie’s Secret), my husband and I took a road trip through Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Tennessee to visit all the settings of the stories.

Do you enjoy reading your own stories?
I have to admit that I rarely read my own books once they are in print for fear of finding things I wish I could change. I’m the world’s worst critic of my own books! However, I recently read one of those book-of-the-heart books that I wrote way back in 2003 called Major League Dad. It’s out on e-book now, and I have to say I still love that book. It was inspired by my youngest son, Jacob, who was about 10 at the time and a huge baseball fan and Little League first baseman. Oh, and my publisher has reduced it to $1.99 although I’m not sure how long. Here’s the link in case you’re interested in taking a peek at it:  Major League Dad

Favorite book or character you have written?
That’s really hard. I LOVED Mason from Major League Dad (see above). Then there was Daniel Beck from The Confidential Life of Eugenia Cooper! Oh my. Even the heroine from book 2 of that series, Anna Finch and the Hired Gun, was in love with Daniel. Of course, she got her own hero, who was pretty awesome too. Then there’s Pinkerton Agent Kyle Russell, the inventor and lawman from Millie’s Treasure. Who can resist a man who rescues the heroine in his own private flying machine on New Year’s Eve 1889? In chapter 1, no less! Then there is Jefferson Tucker, the Scotland Yard detective hero of Sadie’s Secret who just happens to be the identical twin of the villain Will Tucker…

Any advice for those who are just starting out?
Yes. Just write. Write what’s inside of you begging to get out. Write without editing anything until it is all done and THEN go back and clean up your mess. And write until it’s ready to go and then send it off and start another one. Bottom line: WRITE!

Are you sad to end a series and leave the characters behind?

Do you write about places you have lived?
Yes, I am a native Texas who has lived in Louisiana. You’ll see those two states prominently mentioned in my work.

The Brides of Texas
Book 0.5: Plain Trouble
“A Ranger in possession of a good salary and a desk job is surely going to start thinking about a wife, don’t you think? And what better place than Bitter Springs, Texas to find one?”

If only the handsome Texas Ranger in Bess Jones' kitchen wasn't the same ill-bred youth who taunted her with the playground verse, "Bessie Mae, plain as day" all through her growing up years. The way this man on a mission looks at her now almost gives Bess hope that he might have changed his mind about her, although she's pretty sure he's just passing through Bitter Springs on his way to bringing yet another criminal to justice. Besides, she was a twenty-seven-year-old spinster, and nothing ever happened in Bitter Springs, Texas.

Texas Ranger Josef Mueller is looking to catch a murdering bank robber before someone else dies. The last place he figured to be looking was in the town where he grew up. The town he hasn't set foot in for the last ten years. What began as a simple investigation has now moved dangerously close to home. Now if he could just figure out how the Jones girl he teased in his youth has somehow tangled him up in a romance he never saw coming.

Romance, a Texas Ranger, and a feisty Texas gal a man can't forget. Who says nothing ever happens in Bitter Springs, Texas?
Book 1: The Marrying Kind
Anything can happen when four meddlesome, retired Texas Rangers try their hand at matchmaking. As Christmas draws near, clandestine meetings are held to foil Sheriff Rafe Wilson's plans to leave Cut Creek and the infuriating dressmaker Peony Potter behind. Will Rafe follow in his father's footsteps and join up with the Texas Rangers or will a Christmas miracle keep him home where he belongs?
Note: this novella first appeared in Lone Star Christmas.
Book 2: Coffee Scoop
Reporter Carrie Collins is on a vendetta against all religious con men, and with good reason. Ryan Baxter, a seminary graduate with a Harvard MBA, is head of a non-profit organization, using coffee grown on their Central American plantation, to improve the living conditions of the poor. He sees Carrie, who is a reporter at the Austin Times as a means of getting publicity for their organization. She sees him as just one more crook hiding behind a religious facade and no better than the man who stole her mother's life savings.

Though her boss warns her about approaching a story with her mind already made up, Carrie goes to Cost Rica determined to find out the truth. Should she listen to her heart or her head?

Note: This novella originally appeared in the coffee-themed romance anthology Fresh Brewed Love.
Book 3: Hollywood, Texas
Adam Chambers settled into his quiet life after the love of his life chose Hollywood, California over life in Hollywood, Texas. And now she has returned and claiming to need a job. Right, the woman whose face is plastered everywhere he looks needs a job.

Amy Foreman might have been gone for five years but she never forgot her first love. Seems like he is doing fine without her though. Or is he?

What a great story! It was on the shorter side but definitely a full blown story. When troubles hit Miss Hollywood her heart sends her running back home to Adam, even if she don't realize. Can there be any second chances for the movie star and veterinarian? Read the book and see for yourself.
Book 4:  Idle Hours: A Romance
When Lia Stephanos' doctors order her to leave New York and the frantic pace of her publishing career behind, she decides to take residence in a lovely dollhouse of a cottage on the edge of a Texas Hill Country lake near her best friend the romance writer. Though she has promised her cardiologist she will not put her ailing heart through any further trauma, soon Lia finds she's falling head over heels for Ben Carson, the man whose bait shop will soon be turned into her newest project: a restaurant called Idle Hours. At Ben's urging, Lia Stephanos takes up fishing to help repair frazzled nerves. Will she soon find her heart drifting into calmer, deeper waters? Can Ben make good on his plans to hit the road or will Lia Stephanos prove too difficult to walk away from?

The Secret Lives of Will Tucker Series
 Book 0.5: Miss Merriweather's Marriage
This is a very short read about how Millicent Victoria Elizabeth Merriweather meets Captain Winthrop Brimm. Millicent would prefer to be riding horses and other such endeavors but her father insists on her marrying. Thanks to her place in society, it seems enjoying a good fast run on a horse is not part of what is acceptable. Thank goodness she has found a man who appreciates her and her love for horses.

Brimmfield Estate is the pride and joy of Winthrop and he plans on ensuring that it stays in the family for many years in the future. This is just the beginning of the story that continues in the next three books: Flora's Wish, Millie's Treasure and Sadie's Secret.
Book 1: Flora's Wish
May 1887—Flora Brimm is determined the fifth time is the charm. Back home she has a reputation as “Fatal Flora,” a woman whose previous four fiancĂ©s died in untimely accidents. Flora is desperate to marry, because producing an heir is the only way she can keep her family’s estate. She’s confident this visit to Eureka Springs with her grandmother will help her land a husband.

Pinkerton detective Lucas McMinn is hot on the trail of Will Tucker, the thief who broke his sister’s heart. When he discovers the slippery fellow with Flora, he thinks they are in on the devious plot together. Will Flora be able to convince Lucas of her innocence? Will Lucas catch the elusive Mr. Tucker?

And, more importantly, will Lucas survive if he pursues Flora’s heart?

An engaging story of how God can move circumstances to bring love, joy, and lasting fulfillment to the most hopeless heart.
Book 2: Millie's Treasure
Memphis 1890—Bookish heiress Millie Jean Cope is as clever as she is beautiful. Unfortunately, though adept at solving puzzles and cryptograms, she doesn’t realize her new fiancĂ© isn’t who he claims to be, but instead is a charming scoundrel. The infamous Will Tucker is presenting himself as a British gentleman, Sir William Trueck, though in reality he is a crafty criminal looking for a hidden map to a secret treasure.

Pinkerton agent Kyle Russell has been on Tucker’s trail for years. At last Kyle believes he has Tucker cornered, but he is uncertain whether the lovely woman on the con man’s arm is an unsuspecting victim or willing accomplice. Finding reasons to spend time with Millie is easy. Keeping himself from falling in love with her is another issue entirely.

A fun and entertaining story of how God can shine the light of truth on the most cryptic circumstances.
Book 3: Sadie's Secret
Sadie Callum is a Pinkerton agent. Not an easy thing to be when you have five protective brothers following you around when you are on the job, and parents who want their only daughter safely home on the Callum Plantation. And her latest assignment? Watching over the handsome man she just helped get released from prison.

William Jefferson Tucker just lost a year of his life because of his identical twin brother, William John Tucker, yeah, their father gave them the same first names, only thinks of himself. Where Jefferson is law-abiding and in fact works for what is now known as Scotland Yard, his brother lives the life of the very characters he must put away.

This book was full of adventure, some humor, mystery and of course…romance. The previous books have different Pinkerton agents on the job. The story starts with a short free read Miss Merriweather’s Marriage then Flora’s Wish and Millie’s Treasure. If you enjoy series where you know all the background, you’ll want to start from the beginning.

We met Anna Finch in book 1 of this series. She loved Daniel Beck, but the love was not returned. Now she just wants to live her life and not be stuck in a marriage. She wants to be a journalist, ride horse astride and shoot her gun. Her parents want someone to marry and tame her.

Jeb Sanders is a Pinkerton agent who carries a grudge. He just wants to rid the world of Doc Holliday. He does not want to be a nursemaid for a spoiled rich girl, but he his. This fancy gal is much more than she seems, he quickly finds out.

I really enjoyed this story. It continued with characters you meet in book one. Added to the mix are Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday, along with an annoying newspaper columnists who writes as he sees it, usually not as it is. A really enjoyable series.

31 Devotions for Writers
Feeling discouraged and need some encouragement?

Read 31 Devotions for Writers, written by published authors who want to help encourage you in your writing through God's written Word.

Writing can often be discouraging. Some writers have spouses or children who don't understand why they spend so much time on the computer. You may face a multitude of rejection from agents or publishers. Or you may not get encouragement in the form of reviews or be nominated for an award. So why do we write? Because we can't give it up! God has called us to write and we feel compelled to pour out our soul in written words. The Bible says, Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing. 1 Thessalonians 5:11 Which is the purpose of this devotional, to encourage you that you are not alone. Other writers have dealt with similar feelings or frustrations, or question themselves, their writing or their motives. I pray that each of you is encouraged as you read the devotions by all of the authors. May God bless you and give you the encouragement and peace you need.
