Interview with Loree Lough
Name one thing about yourself that would shock readers if they knew.
I paid my way through college, singing in hotel lounges! You know the “piano lady” who’d sit in the corner, crooning tunes? Well, put a stool in front of the gooseneck mike, and me on the stool with a Yamaha on my lap, and call me the “guitar girl.”

When not writing, what hobbies do you enjoy?
If it gets my hands dirty or makes a mess, chances are, I’ll enjoy it! Gardening, painting (on the house walls and canvas), woodworking, cooking/baking, rearranging furniture and tidying closets and dresser drawers are just a few of my pastimes.

What is the strangest real life situation that is in one of your stories?
Well, it isn’t in a story yet, but it will be, with the release of Book One in the “Sterling Street Secrets” series (set in Denver in the 1880s): I love horses. Love everything about them. But I’m dumb as a saddle horn when it comes to “controlling” them. And they’re smart, so the instant I stick one toe into the stirrup, they’re on to me. Example: I once rode an elderly horse. He had a cataract. I’m serious! The stable guy said “He’s the gentlest mount we have.” Gentle, maybe. But he figured me out in one blink of his blind eye, and no sooner had I “chk-chked” him into motion, he headed OFF the bridle path and ONTO some for-his-eye-only trail. Half an hour later, when the rest of the riders returned to the barn, I was still sitting in the saddle…IN the barn, sighing as he contentedly munched hay. I’m writing that into a scene in Shaina’s Secret. You’ll have to read the book to find out which character shares my experience!

When did you start writing?
I started writing in the mid-80s. My first article was published in 1986, and my first novel was released in 1994.

What is your favorite genre?
Whichever one I’m reading at the time. Wish I could be more specific, but I’ll read just about anything (provided there are no demons, werewolves, or vampires in the story). The same is true for what I write. I love historicals that take me back to a different time and place. And I love contemporaries because they allow me to deal with current-day issues.

Have you traveled to do research for your books?
Oh, yeah! I’ve visited every state and country featured in my books.

Do you enjoy reading your own stories?
Absolutely not, because I’m constantly groaning to myself, and muttering things like “Ack! You used the same word twice on the same page!” and “Why didn’t you give that guy a pet!”

Do you laugh and cry while writing your books?
Yep. Which is why I prefer to write alone, in my office, with the door closed. Heh.

Favorite book or character you have written?
Y’know, I really like all the characters, which means I like all the books they’ve ‘starred’ in. But if I had to choose just one that stands out? It would be Dusty Parker, the hero in A Man of Honor. It isn’t unusual for me to develop a little crush on my heroes, but Dusty? Whew. I fell head over heels for this rough-around-the-edges, big-hearted fella!

Any advice for those who are just starting out?
Ask yourself What’s my favorite genre? If that’s the type of book you read more than any other, write in that genre. At least to start. You know what you like and don’t like about the genre, so you’ll have a far better idea what to do…and what to avoid…when writing similar stories.

Attend writers workshops, seminars, and conferences. Not only will you pick up valuable tips, you’ll meet people who, like yourself, are struggling with the same plot-character issues.

All that stuff about “Write the book of your heart”? Forget it…unless your industry research shows solid proof that the book of your heart is something the reading public (i.e. publishers) are buying.

Do you ever forget that the characters are not real?
Interesting question…. I see them as real, in that they must be multi-faceted people with a history filled with flaws and secrets and positive character traits. But I’ve never gotten so lost in a story that I’ve forgotten they’re fictional.

Are you sad to end a series and leave the characters behind?
Always. Always.

Do you write about places you have lived?
Yep. Not only places where I’ve lived, but the city I live in, now!

Do you read the same types of books you write?
Not always. I read non-fiction (mostly for research), and some truly gritty stuff that’s nothing like the stories I write.

What is your go-to snack?
Popcorn! Sometimes, I like it with lots of butter. Other times, I gravitate toward kettle corn. Occasionally, I’ll pop up a bag of caramel corn. I eat it from a bowl while pacing around the house, puzzling out plot issues, because buttery/sticky fingers and computer keyboards do not make good companions.

First Responders Series
Book 1: From Ashes to Honor
 Amazon
If he had only answered that last phone call from the World Trade Center . . .
Minutes before two jumbo jets changed US history, New York police officer Austin Finley ignored the call from his brother, who’d been bugging him for days. Trying to live with his one regret causes hatred and bitterness to consume Austin, and when counselor Mercy Samara recommends desk duty, Austin resigns. Haunted by her own memories of 9/11, Mercy takes a job as a school counselor in Baltimore. When Austin, now an EMT, responds to an emergency at Mercy’s school, both are stunned and wary.

Finally, their common—and painful—memories turn suspicion into friendship, then romance.

But hard questions linger: Can they truly move beyond their past harsh judgments and harsh words? Will their past finally bring them closer or—as the tenth anniversary of 9/11 draws near—drive them farther apart?
Book 2: Honor Redeemed
Amazon
Matt is a reporter and Honor is a SAR who also trains search dogs and teaches their handlers. The press had done Honor wrong so she immediately becomes defensive around Matt. But he breaks through her hard shell and soon she enjoys being around Matt and his twin boys. They both struggle with believing they can make it though. Matt is concerned of his boys getting hurt and Honor is always waiting for the past rumors to come between them or that they could harm Matt's family.

This book was excellent as far as “seeing” how a search and rescue is and what a rescue dog and their handler would do while searching. The book did not have the clear closure at the end that I like to see but that is my personal preference. After reading book 3 it clears things up. And I also have since learned it's more about the real life of First Responders than the romance.

Book 3: A Man of Honor by Loree Lough
Amazon
Pastor Dusty Parker had come a long ways from where he once was. From living dangerous and reckless….as if it didn’t matter if he lived or died….to opening Last Chance after becoming a Pastor. Between the eleven boys, keeping up the old home they live in and having to put up with the gang leader, Gonzo, who wanted his boys in his gang….Dusty found a beautiful distraction from life while on a SAR mission.

Teacher Grace Sinclair went on the mission to look for one of her students who disappeared the week before. The handsome man she partnered with made it clear he didn’t like newbies, she never even learned his name. And yet they found each other once again and were pulled together like magnets. And she loved his Last Chance boys as well.

This is the third book in the series, and I would recommend reading the first two if you enjoy “seeing” the whole story. This book don’t shy away from the real life facts. Not everything always turns up bright and happy. Loree has brought these characters to life so well that I shed many tears while reading and many smiles over the antics of the Last Chance boys. Be prepared for the unexpected. These books are more about real life situations more than romance. There is an underlying romance but the life of First Responders, real life, is the stronger theme.

And yet, after fifteen minutes with Drew, Logan seemed to "get it" better than Drew's own father ever did. Had Bianca misjudged him? Maybe he had hidden depths. She would've liked to find out, but that was a risk she just wouldn't take…not when her precious boy was involved.
