Interview with Deborah Hale
Name one thing about yourself that would shock readers if they knew.
I wouldn't want to go back and live in the past I write about. I love reading and writing about earlier periods in history, but at the end of the day I like to pop my dishes in the dishwasher, grab a tub of ice cream from the fridge and watch a video or something I've recorded from the television.

When not writing, what hobbies do you enjoy?
I sing in a Celtic choir along with my husband, sister and nephew. Our group has raised over $10,000 from benefit concerts for rural churches and other charities. To keep my body from seizing up, I enjoy practicing Taoist tai-chi, which concentrates of the health benefits. I also enjoy playing board games with my family.

Do you laugh and cry while writing your books?
If I don't cry toward the end of writing my stories, I get very worried. I love a good cry when my emotions are stirred by a story. My favorite books (Anne of Green Gables, The Prydain Chronicles and the Harry Potter books) all made me cry, so it's something I strive for in my own writing. Sometimes I laugh, too, especially when characters say and do unexpected things.

Any advice for those who are just starting out?
Don't be afraid to make mistakes and don't take too long to get your story started. Jump right in with some interesting action to grab your reader.

Do you ever forget that the characters are not real?
Not as often as they do! Honestly, sometimes my characters drive me crazy by saying or doing things I don't expect (or want) them to do. But when that happens, I have to honor it no matter how much harder it makes my job, because it means they really have taken on a life of their own.

Confessions of a Courtesan
This is about Elizabeth Bridget Cane, known as Elizabeth Armistead. It is both fact and fiction. At the end of the book the details of the people and events are listed, including the real Elizabeth's obituary. Deborah writes it in such a way that gets you thinking how we don't know how people ended up where they were and maybe they don't always want to be there. In the fictional story you see the human side of Elizabeth. Her hopes and dreams and not just some lusty woman who chose to sell her body to the Earls, Dukes and Prince of Wales.

Deborah has taken the facts and created a story around them. In this case, a young girl who lost her mother and brother to illness and it had left her father blind. Living off what meager coins they received from her father's begging. When he passes away, Elizabeth is on her own and not doing well. She cannot get a job as you need money to apply or decent clothing. When she is at the point of freezing or starving an old friend comes across her and takes her in. She falls in love with him but he does not return it. He took her in with the purpose of gaining coin but bringing her to a House of Pleasure- a brothel where they catered to the higher class and made sure the girls stayed disease free.

The fictional Elizabeth takes on the name of her rescuer to remind herself not to fall in love again. After some years in the same place she is kicked out after one her patron's rowdy friends burst into her room. She goes to those men and asks them to help her because the Queen of Courtesan's. And they do. She creates a lasting friendship with Bob, Charles and Richard. This book walks through her life and her conquests. It is not a detailed account of every sexual encounter as much as showing her life. The book makes you think what you would do if you lived in a time where so few choices were open to women. In real life she did become a sought after Courtesan. When she was in her 30's she broke the cardinal rule of the Courtesan; never fall in love. The fictional Elizabeth did not choose her circumstances but ended up taking control of them.

Book 3: The Baron's Governess Bride
Grace Ellerby's life has not been easy. After her father's death her "evil stepmother" sent her to a school for Vicar's orphans. Grace had to suffer from something unusual...her beauty. Fellow students were jealous of her and teachers demeaned her. Her saving grace had been her close friends. They still wrote regularly and two of them even found true love and happiness. Grace just wanted to keep a governess job where male attention didn't send her running. Thus her plan….she uglified herself. Cinderella covered in ashes.

Widower Lord Rupert Steadwell needed an ugly governess obviously. He couldn't have his three daughters endure another pretty governess leaving them for marriage. When he met Miss Ellerby he knew she'd be perfect. She looked the perfect part of someone who accepted their plainness and knew marriage was not an option. He watched her win his daughters over and he even became fond of their walks together. But he had an obligation to marry again and produce an heir….who knew his decision would cause such chaos in his home.

Deborah brings her characters to life and has you turning the page after page hoping that Rupert can see the beauty within the plain governess. She brings out the unique, adorable and obstinate personalities of Grace’s three charges as well. A unique and delightful story with hints of the old fairy tale, Cinderella. This is the third book in the series. Book 1 is Much Ado About Nuptials and it’s in a Novella Called The Wedding Season, Book 2 is The Captain’s Christmas Family. Enjoyable stories of girls who had a hard life and never would have thought their lives could have fairy tale endings.

Manga/Graphic Novels

  1. I agree, I love reading about the period, but I like my dishwasher and other modern conveniences. I have your "Confessions of a Courtesan" on my Kindle in the TBR folder. I have added a ton more of yours to my wish list, they all sound wonderful! Thanks for stopping by the party.

  2. Lisa, I really enjoyed Confessions of a Courtesan. It wasn't the type of romance I was used to, but really interesting.

  3. I really enjoyed Wedding Season. Not my usual type of book I read. A few more of the books listed here sound really interesting. I will have to check them out.
