MaryLu Tyndall Book List

Interview with MaryLu Tyndall
Name one thing about yourself that would shock readers if they knew.
I’m an extreme introvert! I can hold my own socially but much prefer to be alone. I hate parties and social gatherings and avoid them like the plague.

Have you traveled to do research for your books?
Yes! Charleston SC, Key West, Baltimore, San Diego, Santa Barbara, Washington DC, and Annapolis. Someday I’d love to go overseas to Europe, but we shall see.

Do you laugh and cry while writing your books?
All the time! If I’m not laughing or crying, then the book probably won’t end up being very good. In my opinion, stories must evoke emotion, deep emotions, to truly satisfy.

Any advice for those who are just starting out?
Study, Work Hard, Write your Passion, and Pray without ceasing. Write something every day, even if it’s only a paragraph, and follow where God leads.

Do you ever forget that the characters are not real?
They’re not? Are you kidding me? LOL Well, I guess the answer to that is a most definite Yes. About halfway into each book, my characters become my best friends. To me, they ARE real. In fact, each one stays with me forever, like old friends who you never lose touch with.

Are you sad to end a series and leave the characters behind?
Always. In fact I usually have to take several weeks to a month off in between series before I can really start thinking of new characters.

What is your go-to snack? Popcorn!

Book 5: The Reckoning
Charles Towne Belles by M.L. Tyndall
Book 1: The Red Siren
These books are about three sisters: Faith, Hope & Grace Wescott. They have an older sister who is married and still in England, her name is Charity. Their father is an Admiral in the Royal Navy and spends more time at sea then with his family. Their mother died in childbirth. As she lay dying she asked Faith to take care of her sisters. A request that Faith would do anything to accomplish.

Faith Wescott would not allow her sisters to be sold into marriages as their older sister, Charity, was. She was married to a despicable lecherous man who had his eyes set on her three sisters as well. Faith was sickened that they came to America without her older sister but was thankful to be away from her husband. Faith's father agreed if she could get enough wealth to support the three girls he would not force them into a marriage. She found that pirating was her way to do that.

Dajon Waite had one chance to prove to his father he was worthwhile. He had almost made it to his destination with his cargo with the Lady Em when they seen a lady in distress on another ship. His mistake was helping her, for she was no lady but a pirate. After the disgrace of losing his ship and his father disinheriting him life went downhill unto God lifted him out of the muck and gave him a new chance. Now he was a captain in the British Royal Navy and he was guarding the Carolina water from pirates. Admiral Wescott asked him to watch over his three daughters as he was called out to sea on duty. Dajon tried to refuse but received orders that the Admiral already left.

Sir Wilhelm Carteret had asked for Faith's hand from her father and was granted so. Faith begged to be given time to get her “soap” business going and make the money before the promise was sealed. Her father gave her until he returned, about six months. Faith is determined to find as much wealth to pirate as quickly as she can during that time. Wilhelm was not one to stand back and not get what he wanted so he plots and plans during the book. Mostly he needs to discredit Dajon.

Hope keeps throwing herself at the wrong men and Grace is determined to continue her work for the Lord helping the needy. To do so she has to go through areas where Indians are a danger to people. With Faith gone on the seas as well as Dajon trying to catch the pirate known as The Red Siren, the two sisters are continuing to sneak out of the house sending the steward, Edwin, into nervous fits.

There are many unique characters in her book. Many are imperfect making the need for redemption that much stronger. Lives are almost destroyed because of envy, greed and pride. The story is full of adventure and danger. You feel the salt water spray you on the deck of the ship and feel the gloominess of the Watch Tower dungeon.
Book 2: The Blue Enchantress
Hope Wescott has always seemed vain, self-centered and a flirt. Her father dismissed her without attention. When Hope received the attention from Lord Falkland she began sneaking off with him. Soon her reputation was in shatter around Charles Towne because she was seen with the rogue and in the taverns as well. Hope was desperate for love. And she had been assaulted at age seventeen and already seen herself as sullied. When Arthur Falkland said he was leaving for a bit she decided to sneak on the ship and surprise him so they could be married sooner. Only problem was that Arthur was already married and had his wife with him.

Nathaniel Mason struggles as an adult with the fact that his mother was a harlot. Even though a Pastor took him in after his mother's death and Nathaniel is a strong believer he still struggles with being good enough. Especially the way the beautiful Hope looks down her nose at him whenever they pass. As Nathaniel passes a slave auction while at St. Kitts he stops when he sees the ragged mess of a person being auctioned is actually Hope Wescott. In the end he buys her freedom and it costs him his ship. He had assumed she had been kidnapped so when he finds it was over an illicit affair he is not happy. And no sooner are they on a ship for home that she is back to her flirtatious ways with the sailors on the ship.

The trip from St. Kitts to the Carolina's is packed full of adventure. The books are written so that you experience them. You feel like you are in the hurricane, stranded on an island, getting sand flea bites, meeting pirates that need a bath, seeing the glory of one of God's sunsets, the dark expanse of water and sky and the spray of the sea hitting you while you stand on the deck.

And if Nathaniel can survive with any earthly possessions, his peace of mind and no broken bones he will be happy. It seems where Hope is there is one accident after another.

Abigail the missionary's daughter, Elise, Gavin, Captain Poole the pirate, the snooty Major Paine and the Hendrick's family are among some of the folks you will travel with on this adventure.

Book 3: The Raven Saint
This is Grace's story. She has been devoted to God from the beginning. Her mother wanted her to make sure her sisters came to Christ as well and Grace carries that burden along with carrying for the people in her area and her family. She brings food, medicine and the gospel even when her life is in danger of Indian attacks. She just did not consider the real danger of being kidnapped until one day in October, 1718 when it became a reality.

Captain Rafe Dubois, French by birth, has a hatred toward the British Navy. His mother was killed during a war and a raid on their Island. So when a don from Spain offered a large sum of money for the daughter of Admiral Wescott Rafe agreed to it. He thought she would be much different than the woman he kidnapped. Instead she had courage and was kind although she was judgmental and pious. He would have second thoughts about selling her but he had hate and revenge to turn to in those times. So many people betrayed him in the past that he did not trust easily.

Grace kept trying to find why God put her in this situation, surely it was to spread his word. She had a way of trying to beat people over the head with the Word rather then ease it up to them. And she was a bit self-righteous. When she escapes the ship at Port de Paix, the Island Rafe grew up on, she does not fair well. She don't speak french, she is robbed and fortunately the robbers did not recognize a woman in boys clothes and after four or five days in the rainy weather without shelter or food she gets help from an unlikely source.

Grace and Rafe are as different as night and day. She is prudish and pious and is a rake who seems to not have many morals. She has never been kissed and he has women throwing themselves at him.

It is quite an adventure that ties up the last of this series. Spyglass the cat is unique and smart, Thorn the first mate who is not all he seems to be, Claire- who has outward beauty but is quite devious, Rafe's father who is just evil although he claims to be a Christian, Annette the slave who is caught between two worlds, Father Aler who left being a Jesuit priest to sail with Rafe, Nicole a soiled dove who reaches out to help Grace when no one else does and helps Grace understand that sometimes people do what they must to survive.

I recommend reading all three books in the order written to get the full scope of the stories.
Surrender to Destiny Series...

But Noah Brenin needs to sail his cargo to England before the war commences in order to prove his worth to his father and make enough money so he won't have to marry at all.

Book 1: Surrender the Night

Both are about to change the course of history forever.

When British soldiers invade Baltimore amid the War of 1812, Rose McGuire, alone on her family farm, is easy prey for a brutal lieutenant. In the midst of the attack, she's saved by British 2nd Lieutenant Alexander Reed. Will she now have to heal, as well as hide, this enemy soldier?

Alex hadn't meant to kill his superior, nor get shot in the process. Now badly wounded, he's at the mercy of this tomboy who obviously hates him. Can he trust her or will she turn him over to the Americans?

Rose is having trouble keeping Alex hidden from her family, the townspeople, and the man intent on courting her. Will the discovery of Alex's presence force her to accept an abhorrent proposal?

As their love blooms, trouble looms, for the British are on the move again. This time, their target is Washington D.C. Will these young lovers at heart find themselves enemies at war?
Book 3: Surrender the Dawn
A superb book. Characters with flaws and sins in their lives, characters that need redemption as we all do. This is the third in the series and I would suggest reading the first two books as there were many things that alluded to what happened in the earlier books.

Luke Heaton was the caretaker for his brother John ever since his parents were murdered. Being they were missionaries Luke turned his back on God and he blamed himself for not saving his parents. John had rickets and needed a brace on his leg which added to Luke's idea of why someone innocent would suffer. He turned his back on God and lived a life against everything his parents believed in. He was a gambler, womanizer and he liked his rum.
Cassandra Channing has lost her father to the war and her two brothers are missing. She is determined to take care of her family without depending on a man. With her families last thousand dollars she is trying to buy shares with a privateer. It is believed a woman involved with ships brings bad luck and none will accept her. After being rescued by Luke Heaton, the town rogue, he suggests joining him. He has the ship but needs the money to fix it up. Smelling the rum on him she rejects his offer until she sees no other way to help her family.

Cassie has lost her faith as well since her fathers death and with her brothers gone. Her overbearing and overly emotional mother wants her to marry Mr. Crane. Her mother misses having all the money to spend. She has two smaller sisters as well.

The romance story is enjoyable as Cassie struggles with feelings for a man who rumors have pegged as a womanizer. The story is more though, you go out on a boat with privateers, see choices of going against country or saving a brother who is most precious to you, the war of rejecting God when you know deep down you need him, a woman fighting to save her family and a man who will do anything to trick that woman into marrying him. The historical part of the books is fantastic as well.

Veil of Pearls (1811)
After seven tormented years of slavery, Althea made her escape from Sir Walter. Her light skin gave no hint to the quarter of negro blood running in her veins and she was able to not only find work but a place to stay in her new life in Charlotte. She changed her name to Adalia Winston. All was well until an aristocrat was attracted to her….and a spoiled rich girl set out to get her out of the picture so he would notice her instead.

Morgan Rutledge was handsome, rich and a sought after bachelor. From the moment he was tongue lashed by the common servant, he was intrigued. And soon he found himself truly enjoying her company. But could Morgan give up all his worldly possessions to be with Adalia?

MaryLu has once more written a book so vivid that you feel the salt water spray on your face while on a ships deck and cringe at the crack of a whip. She shows how far some people will go to get what they want….not matter who gets trampled along the way. She shows how many of the people were slaves to more than the human masters as well. Another well written adventure that keeps you hanging on each and every word to the very end.

Pearls from the Sea

  1. After reading this book I searched under Francis Scott Key, John Stuart Skinner and Dr William Beanes to learn more history of the War of 1812. If Francis Scott Key had not went with Skinner to try and free Dr Beanes he would not have been on the British ship that had him witnessing the bombing of Fort McHenry and being inspired to write the Star Spangled Banner. There are no coincidences for believers. It is all in God's timing.
